What is your impression of the neighbourhood where Bina Kutir is located?

Ans: Bina Kutir is situated in an area that reflects a blend of tradition and modernity. While Assam type houses once characterized the locality, modern RCC  buildings now dominate, crowding the surroundings and overshadowing the charm of older structures like Bina Kutir, which stands as a reminder of simpler,  earlier times.

What does the presence of trade and commercial establishments signify regarding the growth pattern of city life depicted in ‘Bina Kutir’?

The city’s rapid growth and modernization have transformed its environment. The peaceful surroundings of Bina Kutir have been replaced by bustling commercial  spaces, reflecting a shift from tranquil residential areas to busy urban centers. This change highlights the loss of traditional values as economic and commercial  development takes precedence. One gets a deep sense of familiarity with the diverse moods of urban life while reading Saurav Kumar Chaliha's stories. The  author wants to expose his readers to the vices, foolishness, and hypocrisy of contemporary citizen life in a variety of situations.

How does the narrator use the Coca-Cola bottle to facilitate the flight of the narrator’s imagination in the story?

Ans: The Coca-Cola bottle becomes a recurring symbol in the story, connecting various moments and scenes. It allows the narrator to move through events and  settings fluidly, each sip evoking memories and thoughts that enrich the narrative. The Coca-Cola bottle becomes a constant companion, subtly guiding the  narrator’s thoughts throughout his journey. It begins when the shopkeeper offers the author the Coca-Cola when he goes to check out the house. Once more, the  shopkeeper was advised by the speaker to keep a refrigerator in order to boost demand for the drink. The speaker took another sip of Coca-Cola after witnessing  two Punjabi men drinking it during the subsequent visit. Thus, by including the Coco-Cola, the author created vivid imagery from the start of the story to its  conclusion.

What plans do the two sons have regarding commercial growth mentioned towards the end of the story?

Ans: The elder son, a professor and writer, envisions establishing a publication house, while the younger son, a doctor, intends to build a multi-story building with  his clinic on the ground floor, reflecting their aspirations to capitalize on the area’s growing commercial potential.

Comment on the significance of the title of the story ‘Bina Kutir’.

The title ‘Bina Kutir’ suggests a small, cozy cottage with personal and historical ignificance in an evolving city. ‘Kutir’ implies a traditional, humble dwelling,  standing in contrast to the modern buildings surrounding it. The story uses the house as a symbol to explore themes of tradition versus modernity, personal values, and the impact of urbanization on individual lives andcommunity bonds. The story takes place in the city of Guwahati. The author who is the protagonist  here, goes out to find a place to rent, but instead he finds himself in a unique circumstance where he learns that there are a number of intriguing people with  different perspectives. Bina Kutir, the home's owner, was a teacher. He was a writer and a diligent individual with a firm and steady temperament. Throughout the  story, the tension between his principles and those of his doctor and professor sons is made clear. The author provides ample evidence of his skill by illustrating  the conflicts, even though the story's characters—the teacher, his two sons, his younger daughter-in-law, and his daughter and son-in-law—have not been  introduced directly. Thus, the title of the story ‘Bina Kutir’ is highly significant with

the story.

How much of the narrator’s speculation do you think is responsible for the characterisation in the story? Give a well-reasoned answer.

The narrator’s speculation plays a key role in shaping characters, providing depth and context to their motivations, interactions, and personalities. These insights  allow the reader to connect with the characters beyond the surface level, although it is essential to recognize that such speculation is subjective. The narrator's  interpretations, while offering valuable perspectives, should be balanced with an awareness of possible biases and narrative reliability to develop a nuanced view  of the story’s characters and themes.

Furthermore, in order to challenge the reader's preconceptions and promote critical thinking, authors may purposefully construct unreliable narrators who  offer skewed or biased speculations. To completely comprehend the characters in these situations, the reader must carefully evaluate the narrator's credibility and  take into account other possible interpretations.

In the end, the narrator's conjectures can greatly aid in characterization by offering insightful analysis and interpretations. To develop a more complex  understanding of the characters and their motivations, readers should critically assess the narrator's conjectures and be aware of their subjectivity
