Kondrahskin countered Pyotr’s argument by saying that it was impossible for a newly  married couple to meet the same convictions and view and once they live together the  matter comes to be better. Kondrashkin called Pyotr dishonest because Pyotr has regularly come to visit  Kondrashkin . He dined with them, sang ballads with Nastya. According to Kondrashking  only suitors do such acts. Now when Pyotr refused to get married with Nastya after all,  Kondrashkin call him dishonest.

Why did Dr. Fituyev refuse to give Pyotr the certificate he wanted?

Dr. Fituyev, who is a friend of Pyotr refused to certify Pyotr as mad because according  to him, those who does not want to get married is not a mad one, on the contrary those  who want to get married is actually a mad.

Why did Pyotr get so disturbed by the rumours about his marriage? What did he  try to do to get rid of the disturbing situation.

When Pyotr heard rumors about his marriage to Nastya Kondrashkina, he became very  upset because Pyotr had no intention of marrying anyone—not even Nastya  Kondrashkina.

To get out of the disturbing situation, Pyotr went to Mr. Kondrashkin, Nastya's father,  to try to explain his situation and say goodbye.

Which crimes of Pyotr, according to Kondrashkin, might land him in Siberia? How  did he react to Pyotr's confession of these crimes and why?

Pyotr, to avoid getting hitched, professed to have been being investigated for  misappropriation and forgery. Kondrashkin claims that Pyotr might be sent to Siberia for  these two offenses. When Pyotr "confessed" these crimes, Kondrashkin initially shocked.  He was baffled and said that he shouldn't get till he realizes his destiny however after  some time, the wish to get atleast one girl married immediately driven him to say that in  the event that Nastya genuinely loves him, she will follow him to Siberia. He asserted  "what is love if it fears sacrifice?" and later again requested Pyotr to propose Nastya for  marriage.

Why did Pyotr decide to adopt "Hamlet's device"? Why did he fail in this venture?

Hamlet is Shakespeare's one of the most popular play, where the protagonist and hero  Hamlet, claims to be mad. He does this because he wants to be unrecognized in his plan  of taking revenge for his dad's murder. Comparatively Pyotr also chooses to claim to be  mad to escape to get hitched to Kondrashkin's girl, Nastya. He asserted that the insane  and mad were not allowed to marry.

He failed in this endeavor in two distinct ways. In the first instance, Kondrashkin,  didn't really accept Pyotr's claims that he was crazy and later said that he would accept

him if he show him a certificate which certify his insanity. Second, when Pyotr went to his  friend Dr. Fituyev's house and asked for a certificate to prove that he was mad, the doctor  said that a person who didn't want to marry was not mad, and that a man who wanted to  marry was the real mad person.

Describe the character of Kondrashin in the light of his responses and reactions  when Pyotr visits his place to say goodbye.

When Pyotr comes to Kondrashkin for the first time, he was very happy to see Pyotr and  gave him a very happy welcome. He even makes fun of Pyotr for thinking that he was  coming to him to talk about his marriage to Nastya. He seemed like a happy person.  However, once Pyotr reveals his intentions to him, Kondrashkin changes.

In light of his reactions and responses to Pyotr's words, we get to know that  Kondrashkin was a typical father who was genuinely impressed by Pyotr and wanted to  marry his daughter. His initial denial of Pyotr's vices, such as drinking, demonstrates his  readiness to overlook Pyotr's negative traits. Later, we see Kondrashkin's desperate  attempt to wed Nastya when he was ready to overlook major offenses like accepting  bribes and participating in embezzlement and forgery. We learn that he has seven  daughters and that he really wanted to marry at least one of them right away. Additionally,  his refusal to accept Pyotr's insanity demonstrates that he was not easily duped.

In conclusion, Kondrashkin's character resembles that of a typical father who has  the responsibility of seven daughters who are yet to get married. He is very forgiving of  Pyotr's "supposed" vices and is easily impressed by his qualities. He is additionally  somebody who isn't handily persuaded about opposite views and can be extremely  determined with his own contemplations and perspectives. When he says that one can  never find a wife whose thoughts and convictions are the same as those of the husband  and when he says that Pyotr cannot be mad because he is speaking so logically, we see  that he can argue logically. His desire to see a medical certificate also shows that he is  someone who only believes the facts and is not easily persuaded by weak arguments.

Do you think Pyotr was more self-centred than Kondrashkin as revealed in the  conversation between the two ?

Pyotr and Kondrashkin are both self-centered, wanting to get what they want at any cost.  Kondrashkin is prepared to go to any lengths to get Nastya married to Pyotr, and Pyotr,  on the other hand, has no qualms about lying through his teeth in order to achieve his  desired outcome of not marrying her.

Pyotr had been visiting the Kondrashkins and spending a lot of time with Nastya for which  People were led to believe that he was keen on wedding her. But Pyotr didn't mean to do  that, and he doesn't seem to apologetic that he might have given people false hopes.  Later, when he tries any trick to avoid marriage, it does show that he is only concerned  with himself and doesn't seem to care about how other people feel. On the other hand,  Kondrashkin demonstrates his self-centered attitude by being willing to accept all of  Pyotr's vices. He only cares about getting his daughter married to a drunkard who is  insane, on trial for embezzlement and forgery, and who is also a runaway convict living  under an alias. It is very difficult to say with any degree of conviction that either Pyotr or  Kondrashkin is actually more self-centered than the other because the conversation  between the two characters reveals that they are both self-centered.

Who, do you think, has won the game? Justify your answer.

Since neither Kondrashkin nor Pyotr has actually achieved their desired outcome at the  conclusion of the story, neither of them has truly won the game. Kondrashkin really  wanted Pyotr to marry his daughter Nastya, and Pyotr wanted to stay single. Pyotr  pretended to be mad because he didn't want to get married and needed a certificate from  his doctor to prove his medical condition. His friend Dr. Fituyev, denied him this certificate.  He claimed that a man who does not want to marry is not insane rather insane was a man  who wanted to marry. Dr Fituyev says these words since he recently had a major fight  with his wife and he was still extremely irate.

However, Kondrashkin may appear to have won because he stated that he would  not allow Pyotr to marry Nastya unless Pyotr presented a medical certificate proving his  insanity. Pyotr failed in this task because he was unable to obtain a certificate to support  his madness.
