Ans: By the phrase “Let one Bird sing” the poet means to say to give voice to atleast one bird so that it can sing once again and raise the voice of protest against the exploitations.

What happens to the trees in autumn?

When autumn comes the trees become lifeless. Autumn comes like a monster and uncovers the  trees and makes them naked. Their yellow leaves fall off the trees and those are scattered over  the ground. Trees are exploited in such a way but they could not raise their voice against such  exploitation.

What do you understand by the expression ‘ebony bodies naked’?

The expression ‘ebony bodies naked’ means that autumn represents change as it destroys the  trees and left them without their outer layer as the stems of the trees are completely empty now.

What does the poet mean by ‘birds that herald dreams’?

The line ‘birds that herald dreams’ indicates that the things that gave people hope before World  War 2 had started have now long been gone.

How does autumn affect the birds’ life?

In the autumn season, the birds go away from far off places as if they spend time in exile. No  birds can be seen on the trees and the song of birds could not be heard.

Why does the poet invoke God of May?

The poet invoked the God of May to bless the withered bodies of the plants, with the passion of  renewal of life. He prayed to renew the dead veins of the plants with life, and give some trees  the gift of green so that birds could come back again and sing.

How does the poet describe the helplessness of the trees in autumn?

In autumn season, the trees find themselves naked, as autumn comes like a monster and strip  down the skin of trees. Even the leaves of the trees who are called the heart by the poet become  yellow in colour. The season autumn also scatters the leaves on the ground. They become so  helpless that they can’t even raise their voice of protest when someone walk over them.

How does the poet create the impression that autumn is a time of silence?

The time of silence in autumn is represented by comparing the condition of birds whose voice  are torn out of their throat. They are exiled from their song. Now, the birds without their voice  can’t raise their voice against the exploitation and this brings their life to an end by falling to the  ground even before the hunter string his brow.

How does the poem represent the tress as human entities?

In the poem, the trees have been personified as human bodies by the poet. As in the fourth line  of the poem, the poet has says the leaves of the trees as their “hearts” which have been shaken

out by autumn. The yellow leaves are scattered on the ground and anybody could trample them  out of shape. Just like human beings bear violence from those in power likewise the trees are  also now accepting the rudeness of autumn and no voice of protest can be heard.

Why does the poet associate God of May with the ‘passion of resurrection’? Why does he say ‘let  one bird sing’?

The poet invokes the God of May so as to bring dead things of autumn back to life. The ‘passion  of resurrection’ has the ability to bring some change in the form of spring season.

By the phrase ‘let one bird sing’ the poet means to make the birds as they were, so that  they can raise their voice of protest against the exploitation upon them.

How does the poet depict autumn through a series of images of violence?

Ans: The poet of the poem ‘When Autumn Came’ has come up with a series of images  of violence to show the adverse effect of Autumn on nature. The induction of imagery  in the line ‘Ebony bodies naked’ represent the trees without their upper layer whose  leaves are also taken away by Autumn and make them scattered over the ground.  Again in the line ‘anyone could trample them out of shape’, the poet means to say that  the yellow leaves are trampled out of shape by the passerby and no moan of protest  can be heard. The birds, as well effected by Autumn. They go far away from their  sweet home and spend time in exile. The voices of the birds are taken out of their  throats, they no longer can be heard singing. Thus, with help of a series of imageries  as mentioned above, the poet tries to depict the ravages of the autumnal season on  life. These also symbolises how voices of the lower class people viciously silenced by  those in power.

Describe the poet’s distinctive treatment of nature as reflected in the poem?

Ans : The poet in the poem ‘When Autumn Came’ has depicted nature as cruel and  harsh in Autumn season. It strips the trees down to the skin and the bodies of trees  become bare. It also takes away the hearts of trees i.e., yellow leaves and scatter  them on the ground. The leaves don’t even protest when someone trample them out  of shape. Nature in Autumn future adverse effect on the life of birds. They are exiled  from their home and their voices also have been taken away. Now the birds are not in  a position to sing anymore and they don’t have ability to resist such exploitation. The  same birds submit themselves to death even much before anyone tries to kill them.  Therefore, the poet has distinctively shown his view on nature in this poem. The poet  has also whole heartedly urged the God of May to bless the withered bodies of trees  and requested to give voice to atleast one bird so that they can sing once again.

How does the poem express the poet’s faith that autumn can only temporarily  disturb life in the world of nature?

Ans: The poem ‘When Autumn Came’ though starts with the description of harshness  of Autumn in trees and later in the life of birds. But in the end of the poem, the poet  has shown some hope that there can be good phase again after lots of destruction. By urging to the ‘God of May’ the poet hopes for a change, change in the form of  Spring season. This will give life to all the withered bodies of trees and voice to atleast  one bird again. Thus, the poet has absolute faith in Spring season, that it will bring  change in everything, including those are exploited. This also symbolises that the  lower class in the society will also find themselves alive with voice once again.
