The sportsman in this episode has claimed to be a friend of Corbett’s and offered to kill the tiger.  The villagers first encountered the sportsman and his team when they were building a machan  inside the forest. The sportsman climbed up the machan and camped there. When he saw the  tiger, he didn’t shoot the tiger and allowed it to carry away the kill. When his gun bearer  questioned him on this, the sportsman acted to have not seen the tiger and while he was lowering  the lamp down from the tree, it slipped and fell. The dry leaves on the ground caught fire and  soon it spread into the distance. The fire only stopped much later when it rained for a while. On  the next day the sportsman left the village with his team. He came to help the villagers, but  instead ended up causing harm to the forest and also he couldn’t kill the tiger. In the second incident, the villagers had hung the body of the woman killed by the tiger atop a  rhododendron tree to try and entice the tiger to come again. When the tiger came back and took  the body away, the villagers, without any arm, very bravely followed the drag for half a mile and  after finding the half-eaten body, the villagers made another machan there. Thus, with this two  incidents we understand the bravery and courage of the villagers.

He says that even urgent telegrams take a long time in transmission  and because he had to do a long journey that consists a thousand miles by rail and road, and the  last twenty miles on foot. Thus, to cover this long distance, it took him a long time, roughly a  week, to arrive at the village.
